In the first book Light finds the Death Note and vows to use it's powers to rid the world of all evil. Light begins to write names of all the known criminals in and outside of prison. the NPA calls in L to worked on the case with tem. L finds out that Light is in Japan because he broadcasts a criminal, which Light kills, on TV only in Japan. Later in the story L calls on the FBI to start probing the task forces closest family members. A man named Raye Pember is assigned to Light and the end of book one Light finds out Raye's name by making Raye show his ID to him during a bus jacking the Light planned to happen. Raye is killed right after he received a file with all the other FBI agents in Japan that are probing people. Light wrote the names of the FBI agents into the Death Note and they all died. Further on in the story, after most of the task force working the "Kira Case" had left the case, L arranges for the remaining task force members to meet him and work with him in person. At the end of the story L wants to put listening devices and cameras in the houses of the families that Raye Pember was probing before he died. they get put in and Light quickly finds this out because he has complicated ways of finding out if someone has been in his room. Ryuk agrees to look for the bugs and cameras; this should be very helpful because no one can see Ryuk unless they have touched the Death Note.
I absolutely loved this book! I am one of those books that make you have to remember things as the story goes along. It also makes you realize of all the things that special detectives for mass murder cases have to go through to catch a murderer. I think others will love all the mythical creatures and items that are in the story. Shinigami was something that I didn't know about before Death Note, but now I know all about them. Shinigami are death gods that live in the shinigami realm. The only way to kill a shinigami is to make them fall in love with a human and to make them extend the human's life that they fell in love with. They are called death gods because the all carry a book called the Death Note. In order to kill someone with the Death Note you must know his or her name and face. There are many rules that apply to the Death Note such as rules on how many times you can misspell someone's name, and rules to writing the details of the people's death. This was a very good read!
