The medical mechanica factory is brought to the town of Mabase and the adults are happy. A student named Naota is hit, by a woman riding a vespa and wielding a guitar, named Haruko and develops a strange bump in which robots burst out of. Haruko becomes part of his household as well as one of the robots named Canti. Naota is at an abandoned lot when one of the robots that broke free, arrives and warded off by Canti. Mamimi, Naota's insane girlfriend, is seen at the site of a fire that was started in Mabase. Naota goes to the hospital about his bump but meets Haruko instead. They ride on her vespa but fall of a cliff making Naota go through a trance in which he sees Mamimi starting the fires. When they land the bump falls into the ground and scurries away. At school the next day, Naota cuts class with Haruko to go to a shrine where they find the bump creature and the giant hand attatched to a giant body. The bump escapes once again, deftly evading Haruko's attacks with a ukulele. Canti arrives and eats Naota. Naota discovers he can control Canti's enormous strength. Together they destroy the robot.
I loved the story of FLCL because of its rich characters, abstract humor, and insane story. My favorite character in this story would have to be Haruko because of her crazy antics and mysterious origins. In the anime, she is definitely the most animated character, full of energy and songs. I think that her guitar-wielding skills surely contribute to her wild persona, as well as her curiously fast vespa. I also enjoyed the solemn character of Naota. The story later goes on to explain the mysterious bump on his head. He learns that his "bump" is actually a type of psychological syndrome called N.O. Only few people have this ability, and even fewer are able to release it. This syndrome is triggered when a person suffers great emotional and psychological hardships. If the person has the ability, and a little luck, the person's head will become an intergalactic portal, capable of transporting anything through. I think that Naota's brother leaving for America, and his boring life in Mabase definitely contributed to the awakening his N.O, as well as many other things. It becomes more apparent in the second book, that Haruko had hit Naota's head to try to strip up Naota's N.O. in order to bring things through. Her motive remains a mystery until the second book. The connection between Haruko and Naota grows stronger throughout the book. In Naota's eyes, Haruko is a way of escaping his boring town, and being able to enter an entire new world because of her. I think that the story will be enjoyed very much by other people my age and generally anyone 13+. I think they will love the story's otherworldly feel. It is definitely my favorite story and should be shared with everyone.
The title of the story I chose to do my book report on is FLCL, or Fooly Cooly In Japanese, FLCL is said, Furi Kuri. The story of this book was developed by the Japanese animation and graphic novel company, Gainax. Hajime Ueda did the illustrations for this story. FLCL vol. 1 was published in the September of 2003 by the company, Tokyopop, and has 172 pages. Naota, a very bored 12 year-old, is a very important character to the story. Naota's brother left Japan for America leaving Naota to lead a mundane life with his father in Mabase. Everything changes when, the vespa woman, slams a bass guitar into Naota's forehead a couple times. The vespa woman, Haruko, worms her way into Naota's family, into Naota's life. This strange character claims to be an alien who has come to earth on behalf of the Galaxy Space Police Brotherhood to complete an important mission. Despite Naota's disbelief, the mark where she hit him grew into a strange bump that leads to catastrophes so great, they almost have to be dream; or some kind of videogame. A character named Mamimi, a desperate teenager on the brink of insanity, becomes even more unstable when caught up in this mess. Naota's brother, Takkun, had been Mamimi's old boyfriend before he moved to America. Mamimi uses Naota as a substitute for him and even starts calling him Takkun as well as many other things, as if Takkun never left the dull town of Mabase. Naota can clearly see her attachment problems but is blind to his own.
Naota is a normal high school boy living a normal high school life until a vespa woman named Haruko hits him in the head with a bass guitar, changing his normal life into a strange dream, forever.
Haruko is a pink-haired, guitar-wielding, alien girl who came to earth on her yellow intergalactic vespa. As First-Class Patrol officer of the Galaxy Space Police Brotherhood, Haruko originally made the journey to earth on a secret mission, but found much more.
