Jinx is a descendant of a witch (her great-great-great-great grandmother has the witch gene too. Just like her great-great-great-great grandmother. Zach Rozen is a junior in high school who lives next door and supposedly has a crush on Petra. Petra is the au pair who is very kind and beautiful. Tory is Jean's older cousin who has a crush on Zach and she thinks she has her great-great-great-great grandmother's powers but in reality Jinx has them. .

Jinx moves to her uncle and aunt's house in New York City after her first-cast spell goes awry. When she moves to New York City, she sees that her cousin, Tory who used to be pudgy and nice, is now completely Goth. Then one day Jinx finds out that Tory was using black magic (black magic is the bad type of magic) and tries to stop her, but Tory ignores Jean's advice. Jinx and Zach start spending scads of time together, while everybody thinks that they are dating. Tory swears revenge on Jinx after she told her aunt and uncle what Tory was up to lately. Then when Jinx goes to a dance she notices that Tory has a familiar date; Dylan, Jinx's old boyfriend who ended up stalking her after her first speel. Jinx goes home to the dance early. That night Tory holds Jinx hostage and tries to her in order to drink her blood to get magical powers. Zach stops her before Tory does anything bad. Jinx and Zach end up dating while Tory is sent off to military school. Aster that, no one calls her Jinx anymore, they call her Jean, just the way she likes it.
