For my bookreport, I read Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry. The publication date was September 2002. There are two hundred and fifteen pages to the book. The main characters are Kira, Thomas, Matt, and Jo. Kira is a crippled girl without parents and weaves threads, Thomas is a carver, Matt is a tyke that tags along with everyone, and Jo is a girl tyke who sings and has no parents.
In the book, Gathering Blue, a girl, named Kira, looses her mother in a disease and after the death the women in the village want to get rid of her since she is crippled and useless. Kira goes to court and The Council of Edifice decides that she lives in the court's building with the defender, Jamison. She is the village's threader so they make her thread the robe for the singer and her new friend, Thomas, carves the staff for the singer. Kira always thinks about getting blue threads, which are almost impossible to get, while she and Thomas carve and thread. Her other friend, Matt, plays with her and keeps her company when she goes to the old threader's house, Annabella. After months of labor, they all make a new friend named Jo who is th be the next singer for the village. After a month, they finally finish their tasks, the robe and the staff, before the village's big gathering. After the gathering she meets her father for the first time because she thought he was dead but he is blind. He wants her to live with him at a faraway village. What will her chose be, to stay and finish her job or be taken care of and get married? Read the book to find out what happens next.
Gathering Blue is a great book and one of my favorites! It is a great book because it has a lot of adventure and many characters. I think kids about 12 or 13 years old would like this book because of the adventures and the many twists. With each chapter is something new and unexpected events are happening. Some adventures are when Thomas and Kira go to find Matt, find out what the terrifying noises are in the night, and when they encounter a beast in the forest.
