The Return of the Dragon

The Return of the Dragon is a must-read book!

The book entitled The Return of the Dragon was written by Rebecca Rupp and was published in 2005. There are one hundred and fifty pages in it. The four important characters in the story are Hannah, Zachary, Sarah Emily, and Fafnyr Goldenwings. Hannah is twelve years old and is the oldest of a brother/sister/sister trio. Almost never a downer, Hannah tries to make a terrible situation a more comfortable one. She is a Dragon Friend, that is, you are one if you have a fleck of gold etched onto your palm. Then there is Zachary, who is almost eleven. He has a freckled face and has sandy-colored hair. The middle of the trio, he likes to eat a lot so that his physical growth will be sustained. Zachary is both observant and possesses a sound judgment. For example, in his bulky bag of provisions, he has binoculars, a notebook, a tape recorder, and other necessary items. Also, when making a decision, he likes to weigh or relate the evidence with the situation. He is a Dragon Friend as well. The third character is Sarah Emily, who is nine years old and is the youngest of the trio. She wears thick spectacles, manifesting her poor eyesight. She is very imaginative. Not really that knowledgeable, but wanting to, she is very curious of the mysteries of what she hasn’t known yet. Sarah Emily is the most caring person among the trio. She is also a Dragon Friend. Finally, there is Fafnyr Goldenwings, a tridrake (a three-headed dragon), unknown to everyone besides Hannah, Zachary, and Sarah Emily. Fafnyr lives in a cave situated in Lonely Island. The tridrake’s three heads have different eye colors and genders. The first head is a boy and its eyes glow a neon-green color. The second head is also a boy with its eyes shining a soft blue color. The final head is a girl and its eyes gleam sparkling silver. Wise and helpful, it comforts the trio by telling stories to them in its Resting Place (this happens three times in the story). Most of the time, only one head has its eyes open; the other two heads are asleep. But in emergency situations, all three heads are awake, enabling the dragon to wipe out whatever exists in the mind of the oppressor.

The three children, Hannah, Zachary, and Sarah Emily, revisited Lonely Island, an isle owned by their aunt, Mehitabel. Once they arrived, they relaxed into their assigned rooms. Once again, they were excited to see Fafnyr, a three-headed dragon. Everything was fine until they discovered that strangers had decided to camp on the island’s shore near Drake’s Hill, the place where the children visited Fafnyr very often. The children investigated the situation and, to their dismay, found out that a man, who strangely knew about the dragon, was trying to capture it for fame and fortune. The trio tried to stop the man. Unfortunately, the children were captured by the man and his henchmen and were forced to reveal Fafnyr’s hideout. Luckily, Fafnyr was never captured because the dragon wiped out the fact in the man’s mind that the dragon ever existed. Gratefully, the children and Fafnyr lived happily again.

I firmly believe that people of my age should read this great book. The love and care for someone is depicted throughout the story. I really felt the great love shown by the children for the dragon. The children were willing to risk their lives just to protect the dragon from harm. Also, I love how the dragon can take you to another place and time by just telling stories. It’s as if you are seeing the beauty of something through the eyes of another being. The dragon’s wise words seem to make me ponder and learn. Also, the dragon’s mighty features, the powers it possesses, and all of its wonderful characteristics, make me wonder if there is really a mythical creature out there. It will be a wonderful experience to be a Dragon Friend or a Pixie Friend or whatever. This mythical book helps me perceive the world of the mysterious.
