Technology curriculum is taught at least once a week to students in Pre-K through 8th grade. Technology is also integrated into core curriculum for all grades.

Pre-K

  • Drawing & Computer Basics: Students learn the basics of Kid Pix.  The parent or teacher explains the activity and works side by side with the students.  Lessons focus on learning the basic features of the product, starting and quitting an application, and learning to use the keyboard and mouse.
  • Keyboarding: Students learn letter placement on the keyboard and are able to type their numbers to 9 and first name.
  • Computer Terminology: Basic terminology is incorporated into the activity lessons.  Two lessons are also read by the teachers from Let's Discover Computers!
  • Educational (Curriculum Based) Websites: Lessons on the computer include educational websites.  Sites focus on math  curriculum. 

 

Kindergarten

  • Drawing & Computer Basics: Students learn the basics of Kid Pix.  Students do not receive handouts or worksheets; instead the parent or teacher explains the prepared lesson and works side by side with the students.  Lessons focus on learning the basic features of the product, reinforcing math and language art concepts (such as sight words), and learning to use the keyboard, mouse and printer.

  • Technology Projects: Students create art work in Kid Pix and include this as part of class projects.

  • Keyboarding: Students learn letter placement on the keyboard and are able to type their first and last name with capitalization.  Students also type simple sentences and their numbers to 20.

  • Interactive Stories: Students use interactive animated stories as part of their free choice and/or computer time.  Examples are Arthur's Birthday and a Stanley version. 

  • Educational Software: Students also utilize other educational software packages, such as Buzz Light Year for 1st Grade.

  • Computer Terminology: One to two lessons a month are taught by the teachers from Let's Discover Computers!, or from a glossary of computer terms created by the technology curriculum coordinator for Kindergarten. 

  • Educational (Curriculum Based) Websites: Lessons on the computer include educational websites.  Sites focus on math and language arts curriculum.  Teachers also enhance class lessons with age appropriate websites throughout the year.

 

First Grade

  • Drawing & Word Processing: Students learn all the features of Kid Pix (excluding slideshow).  Students also use Kid Pix to learn basic word processing skills, such as point size, fonts, and punctuation.  Students read simple instruction sheets placed by each computer.  Students print their work at the end of each lesson.

  • Curriculum & Technology: Kid Pix lessons incorporate Kid Pix features with traditional first grade curriculum.  Lessons include sight words, telling time, counting money, patterns, and descriptive words. 

  • Keyboarding: Students learn to use multiple keys simultaneously for drawing, typing, and short cuts (e.g. Shift, Alt).  Students learn to type all punctuation, letters, and numbers. 

  • eBook: Students use technology in creating a book for the Young Authors project.  Students save work to a networked class server.  (Examples include an eBook through Kid Pix Slide Show, drawings from Kid Pix).

  • Educational (Curriculum Based) Websites: Lessons on the computer include educational websites.  Sites focus on math and language arts curriculum. 

 

Second Grade

  • SlideShows: Students learn advanced features of Kid Pix, such as creating and saving Slide Shows and creating their own stamps. 

  • Word Processing: Students learn about word processing, and use Apple Works to understand formatting features, saving documents, and word processing terminology.  Students complete lessons that focus on learning features, as well as type in and print Cinquain poems, 1st Communion stories, and other projects.  

  • Internet Terminology: Internet terminology is introduced and taught by a teacher or knowledgeable parent, using Let's Discover Computers! and other materials as provided the Technology Curriculum instructor.  Terminology is incorporated into all online Internet lessons.

  • Educational (Curriculum-based) Websites: Lessons on the computer include educational websites.  Lessons are created jointly between the teacher and Technology Curriculum instructor.  Topics include dinosaurs, Presidents, states, oceans, sandy beaches, Dr. Seuss, math facts, and more.

  • New Technologies: Students are introduced to different types of technology, including but not limited to a digital camera, flash drive, and CD.

  • Writing Mediums: Students complete various computer projects on postcards and letter writing, using websites, Kid Pix and stories from their weekly reading assignments.

 

Third Grade

  • Word Processing: Students expand their knowledge of Apple Works with lessons and worksheets.  Lessons include work on the computer as well as answering questions on handouts.  Kid Pix is also used for some curriculum work.

  • Internet Terminology: Internet terminology is introduced and taught by a teacher or knowledgeable parent, using Let's Discover Computers!.  (The teacher or parent also supplements with other materials.)

  • Educational (Curriculum-based) Websites: Lessons on the computer include educational websites, which complement curriculum for third grade students.  Lessons include information on wetlands, liberty bell, Native Americans, language arts, endangered animals, US states, presidents, nutrition, science fair, and more.  Lesson plans are created jointly between the teacher and Technology Curriculum Instructor.

  • Keyboarding: Daily keyboarding for 30 minutes, for four weeks.  Keyboarding takes place in the Media Center, before and after school.

 

Fourth Grade

  • Word Processing: Students complete three to five weeks of Apple Works lessons.  Lessons focus on formatting and editing text.

  • Search Engines: Students learn to effectively use the Yahooligans search engine to find information on baseball heroes, rocks, California missions, and other topics.  A minimum of six lessons.  Lessons on baseball heroes and missions will be used to complete a written class report.  Students also learn web site terminology, as well as responsible ways of using this type of technology (and other technologies).

  • Internet Research: Students research information and answer questions on Internet sites directly related to fourth grade studies. Topics include California's regions, Christmas around the World, geological rocks, and more.

  • Presentation Graphics: Students complete eight to ten PowerPoint lessons.  Topics include creating slides, using clip art, pasting Internet pictures into presentation, slides shows, transitions, animations, bulleted lists, and more.

  • Keyboarding: Students participate in five weeks of daily keyboarding practice, 30 minutes a day.

  • Electronic Presentation Project: Students create a three slide PowerPoint presentation which incorporates everything they've learned about this product.  Students storyboard the contents, enter the text, add graphics, animation, transitions, sound, and digital pictures, and then print and rehearse the presentation.  Students present their work as a slide show to the class.

 

Fifth Grade

  • Internet Technology & Terminology: Students learn about Internet technology and terminology, browse the Internet for various projects, and utilize various educational websites.  Examples of Internet research include Saint Reports, Technology Flyer, Native American Indians, State Reports, etc.

  • Keyboarding: Students participate in five weeks of daily keyboarding practice, 30 minutes a day.

  • State Reports: Students create a Word document for their State Report.  Presentation includes Internet research and pictures, and more.

  • Planets Project: Students work in small groups to create a report on one of the nine planets, using PowerPoint.  Presentation includes animations, transitions, and pictures from the Internet.  Students must copy and paste slides between presentations.

  • Burn CDs: Students burn CDs with their planets project.  Students learn about CD-ROM drives, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, proper handling, ejecting and inserting CDs, etc.

  • Electronic Presentations: Students present their planets project and other presentations electronically with written speaker notes (note cards).

  • Interactive Computer Programs: Students use an interactive computer program, History Alive, for their social studies class. 

  • Word Processing: Students learn the features of Microsoft Word.  Students create class documents, learn page setup features, editing and formatting, bullets, tables, columns, Word Art, and other advanced features.  Students also create a flyer.

  • Flyer: Students create a one page flyer in Microsoft Word, incorporating all features learned to date (tables, bullets, clip art, footer, Word Art, etc).

  • Presentation Graphics: Students review PowerPoint, utilize it for their planets project, and learn new features of the product such as inserting digital pictures, voice, and media clips.

  • Spreadsheets & Graphs: Students learn the basic features of Microsoft Excel.  This includes creating a spreadsheet with formulas, turning data into a graph, creating a table, and formatting.

  • Databases: Students learn about database programs, and use Apple Works to create a simple database.  Students also use an encyclopedia (another type of database).

 

Sixth Grade

  • Internet Technology: Students learn about Internet technology and terminology, browse the Internet for various projects, and utilize various educational websites.  Examples of Internet research include earthquake myths, volcano risk states, and modern day prophets.

  • Terminology: Students learn about network terminology, including server, security, and wireless information.

  • Word Processing: Students review the features of Microsoft Word.  Students create class documents, learn page setup features, editing and formatting, bullets, tables, columns, Word Art, and other advanced features.  Projects include earthquake myths, and a brochure for MARE week on Islands.

  • Multimedia & Presentation Graphics: Students create an interactive multimedia story using graphics, custom animation, sound (tied to graphics), and hyperlinks in PowerPoint.  

  • Burn & Label CDs: Students burn CDs, and create CD labels in MS Word, for their multimedia stories.  Students review information about CD-ROM drives, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, proper handling, ejecting and inserting CDs, etc.

  • Electronic Presentations: Students present their interactive multimedia stories to their Kindergarten buddies.

  • Spreadsheets & Graphs: Students review and learn features of Microsoft Excel.  This includes creating a spreadsheet with formulas, turning data into a graph, creating a table, and advanced formatting.

  • Buddy Report: Students research and analyze information on the their buddy's family, using tables and graphs created in Excel and then imported into Word documents.

 

Seventh Grade

  • Internet Technology & Terminology: Students learn about Internet technology and terminology, browse the Internet for various projects, and utilize various educational websites. 

  • Science Fair: Students incorporate graphs, tables, and word processing into this project.   

  • CDs & Flash Drives: Students utilize flash drives and CDs for book reports, science fair and other projects. 

  • Electronic Presentations: Students present their book project and other presentations electronically with speaker notes.

  • Word Processing: Students review the features of Microsoft Word.  Students create class documents, learn page setup features, editing and formatting, bullets, tables, columns, Word Art, and other advanced features for book reports, science fair and other class projects.

  • Presentation Graphics: Students review PowerPoint, utilize it for a book report and their ROPEs presentation, incorporating animation, transitions, links, pictures, graphs and tables.

  • Spreadsheets & Graphs: Students review  features of Microsoft Excel.  This includes creating a spreadsheet with formulas, turning data into a graph, creating a table, and formatting.

  • Web Page Design: Students create a web page as a book report and learn about HTML.  Students learn how to add links, marquees, text effects, bullets, and more.

  • Video Animation: Students use iMovie to import pictures and video, and add transitions, effects, titles and sound to their project.

Eighth Grade

  • Internet Technology & Terminology: Students learn about Internet technology and terminology, browse the Internet for various projects, and utilize various educational websites.  Examples of Internet research include book reports, science fair, and Proteus.

  • Keyboarding: Students have the opportunity to review keyboarding for two weeks, 30 minutes a day.

  • Proteus: Students create a Word document for their State Report.  Presentation includes Internet research and pictures, and more.

  • ROPEs: Students work in small groups to create a report on one of the nine planets, using PowerPoint.  Presentation includes animations, transitions, and pictures from the Internet.  Students must copy and paste slides between presentations.

  • Science Fair: Students incorporate graphs, tables, and word processing into this project.   

  • CDs & Flash Drives: Students utilize flash drives and CDs for book reports, science fair and other projects. 

  • Electronic Presentations: Students present their book report and ROPEs project electronically with speaker notes.

  • Word Processing: Students learn the features of Microsoft Word.  Students create class documents, learn page setup features, editing and formatting, bullets, tables, columns, Word Art, and other advanced features.  Students also create a flyer.

  • Brochure: Students create a three fold brochure through a website.

  • Presentation Graphics: Students review PowerPoint, utilize it for a book report and their ROPEs presentation, incorporating animation, transitions, links, pictures, graphs and tables.

  • Spreadsheets & Graphs: Students review  features of Microsoft Excel.  This includes creating a spreadsheet with formulas, turning data into a graph, creating a table, and formatting.

  • Databases: Students use a variety of fields (drop down, radio buttons, text, number, etc) to create a database of characters from 5 books read as part of Literature class.
